Northern & Southern Highlands

The Andes is made up of two mountain ranges that run along each other; here we can find impressive snow-capped volcanoes that stand higher than 5000 meters covered with perpetual snow and ancient glaziers.

These giants cross the range from north to south. Among the most known: the Chimborazo which is the highest snow-covered mountain of Ecuador with 6310 meters and which peak is the world’s closest place to the sun. The Cotopaxi with 5897 meters of high is considered one of the most active and beautiful volcano of the world. The Cayambe (5790 meters) is the only snow-capped volcano on earth located at zero latitude. Northern Illinizas (5116 meters) and Southern Illinizas (5236 meters). According to indigenous’ Cosmo vision, these mountains are considered as a couple: both a male and female mountains. Finally we have the very impressive Antisana that stands at 5704 meters high.

When going through this region the tourists astonish themselves to observe such beautiful landscapes which are an amazing combination between valleys, bleak plateaus, cloud forests, etc.
